Teaming Up for Safer Pain Management: Strategies for Effective Collaboration

Opioid use for pain management has increased substantially in recent decades. Unfortunately, so have the rates of misuse and overdose deaths. Careful medication selection and monitoring are crucial components of chronic pain management strategies, especially for patients continuously using opioids to manage chronic pain. In this session, experts will review strategies for pharmacists to collaborate with the health care team to support safe and effective pain management.

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

At the completion of this knowledge-based activity, participants will be able to:

Describe effective communication strategies between pharmacists and prescribers to optimize care and minimize patient risk.
Describe policies around PDMP use and other mechanisms being used to manage risk and diversion and support appropriate medication use.
