APhA Pain Institute: Expert Debate: Addressing Controversial Topics in Pain Management (pre-registration required)

Pharmacists often are faced with serious challenges when it comes to addressing patients with addiction and the complex recovery process. There is no formula that works for all situations or all patients with the disease of addiction who need pain management. Come to this session to hear experts debate complex topics, including: (1) the efficacy of abuse-deterrent formulations of opioids for preventing misuse and abuse; (2) the safety of cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors; (3) whether naloxone is saving lives or enabling risky behavior; and (4) how to balance the structures of evidence-based treatment recommendations for pain management with the needs of individual patients.
