Every year, more than 2 million people in the United States become ill from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria—23,000 die as a result of their infections. The mortality rate increases in patients with complications of coexisting conditions. To fight these fatal infections, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that antibiotic use must improve. Learn about antibiotic-resistance patterns, incentives for reducing antibiotic use, and strategies to combat overuse of antibiotics.
